They started to appear in my work a lot in 2011 and disappeared form my work in 2012. Sometimes certain shapes speak to me, and in the moment I am uncertain as to why. It becomes clear only over time that these shapes became the building blocks of the work I create today. Photo by Jeremy R. Derks. Seductive signals occur all around us, all the time, and these signals are as old a evolution itself. Some flowers, like the orchid species are perfectly designed to use signals to attract what they want. They have a particular appearance and behavior, some even give off odors to attract insects that will carry their pollen as to allow them to procreate. Birds for example are ornately decorated with bright feathers to attract a mate. They signal their need to seduce the object of their affection by calling them in song or through displays of fancy footwork. The human race uses seductive signals in many ways. In history, religious rituals involving smoke and smoking have been used in attempt to seduce the Gods in order to create favor. Perhaps the most seductive natural form on earth is the female figure. With is many gestures and pleasing proportions, the female form was perfectly designed to seduce. All these signals are used to attract what is most desired, the need to procreate, to have abundance. The Sweet Nectar is my second collab with Darby. Jake C. helped too, by adding the leaves. I made the flowers and bird, and Darby brought it all together in the beautiful frame. She had long flowing hair that attracted all the suitors that came her way. But Medusa took her time, as she was very careful as to which man deserved her affections. One day while Medusa was worshiping at the temple of Athena, the God Poseidon spotted her. He was so taken by her beauty, that he ravaged her right there on the spot. When Athena found out, she was so enraged with jealousy that she turned Medusa's hair into serpents, and turned her face so ugly, that all who looked upon it would turn to stone. Medusa was then tapped, doomed to an eternity of cold hard solitude. But all was not lost, because the serpents loved her and she loved them and she came to know that all she needed was not the affections of men, but that what she needed could only be found within herself. And if your willing to look deep inside you will come to understand that the process is more valuable than any product. She might have fallen that day, but the next day was a new day, with a new opportunity. The great Queen Isis has always been depicted holding the ankh as a symbol of her eternal legacy, as her compassionate rule over Egypt has immortalized her in myth. Previously, my work was mostly of the solid black nature. Very few of my works from 2010-2014 used transparent colors, however in 2014 all the new colors on the market proved to be very inspiring. I fell in love with the way the glass reflects the light of these bright new hues. These colors reinvigorated a new energy within my work, forging a new brighter era for the years to come. Spring always returns bringing the sun and birthing new life. No matter the adversity, a goddess will rise and blossom in beauty and strength and the all the evil in the world won't stand a chance against the power of her love. After a long hard winter in 2014, I found myself having visions of Springtime. It is said in Greek mythology that the Three Fates were three sisters who were the incarnations of fate and destiny. One sister spins the thread of life, the other sister determines the length of that thread or how long one must live, and the third sister chooses the way one must die by using her shears to cut the thread of life. It is said the sisters visit a newborn three days after one's birth to determine their fate. After a very inspiring conversation with one of my best friends Eusheen, I decided to begin putting in serious work in stepping up my function game. We're connected. All of this is bigger than anyone of us. We have created a movement of glass and weed culture that is so revolutionary that future generations will be forever changed by our actions. By our perseverance to stand up for what we believe in. We were meant to be here doing this, right now. A statement kept repeating itself to me... "It's in my DNA".... I was born for this. HeLa is a representation of this idea, with a DNA strand rising from her head and an abstract leaf shield protecting her back. She is also a symbol of my personal evolution in the form of a blueprint I hope to continue to develop for many years to come. HeLa was also inspired by a book I listened to while working on this piece called "the immortal life of Henrietta Lacks". Almost a medium in itself, light is seductively drawn into the slender lines of the glass. When they meet, they instantly become one and perform a dance that can last for eternity or the blink of an eye. The harpy was broke in the mail not once, but three times resulting in me physically driving across the country to deliver it to its home. There is a correct time and place for trying new sculpture Ideas. I suppose I should have tested my original idea for this piece on a smaller scale... When it didn't work out, my three day piece had to be reconstructed which then turned it into a five day piece from hell. Baby steps.... 2. Don't give up. I believe I came in contact with my spirit animal on day four. Seconds away from throwing my precious blossoms against a wall, he a came to me an said "Lace... you've been at this for days now, make it your bitch, and don't let her get the best of you!" Who knew a squirrel would be an expert on patience and determination? Just sayin... 3. Don't be in debt. I like money. Who doesn't right? So when someone hands you a grip of cash for a "Special piece" It's probably a good idea to make the piece first. Then collect the loot. The mindset of going into a project like this needs to be of pure motivation, because otherwise it's really going to piss you off when you pour five days of your life into a project only to realize at the end that you got paid three months ago. This was the case with "Dino Sacrifice, You are my religion". Elbo came to spend much of the winter of 2013-2014 up in the mountains of Evergreen. Very proud of his new tattoo, he told me the story of the Dino. He told me about how a long time ago in the very distant past the Dino's ruled his world. One Dino in particular opened his eye's and tought him the secrets of this prehistoric world. These lessons were so profound to Elbo's understanding of the world that he was forever changed, and he fell in love with that Dino. But this is not a happy story, because the the Dino didn't love him back. He begged and begged for the Dino to love him. But the Dino had no ears to hear him. Done with the teachings, the Dino disappeared leaving Elbo heartbroken, lost and all alone in the prehistoric world. But Elbo couldn't let her go. He preyed everyday for her return, visions of Dino decorated his daily devotions for years until he could no longer stand to wait. He had to resort to drastic measures.... Christmas Eve of 2013 found Elbo and I bowing to the heavens while presenting this offering to his long lost Dino Love. In a desperate plea, Elbo offered himself as sacrifice hoping it would be enough to bring her back. Christmas eve turned into Christams day... Christmas day lead into the new year, where Elbo still waits for the resurrection of his precious Dino Love. Constructed in Evergreen CO. Early on, I found that the flowing nature of glass mimicked the natural flowing nature of a woman's hair. I've been drawn to this idea with near obsession for years. To me the beauty of glass lies in the curves and the flow of its lines. No other medium on earth can accomplish these ideas so delicately and perfectly. Addicted to this idea, I repeated my self over and over again, unsure over the years of what I would discover... Until now. Years of trial and error have finally brought the epitome of form and function to my work. Previously I had gone about the same formula, and my work became stagnant for it. This year I threw out my old patterns and replaced them with fresh ideas. Finally the "princess series" with this "hair tech" idea has come to fruition. Finally, the princess has learned all the vocabulary necessary to speak your language.
